Saevus Finis - Facilis Descensus Averno

Saevus Finis translates to the savage end. This Portuguese trio deliver upon that statement with their debut album Facilis Descensus Averno. A savage entry into the pantheon of extremity. It is discordant death, black metal that is all-encompassing.

Simply put Facilis Descensus Averno is un-merciless. it is a relentless assault on the senses that any moment of melody is simply a prelude and an addition to the horrors within. The blast beats are unabating in their fury, the discordant dissonance keeps you off balance and ultimately merges into a maelstrom of fury or unending doom that is unforgiving. From the opening cacophony that is “Scourge of Humanity” through to “Unfulfillment,” “Corporeal Malfeasant,” and ‘’ Facilis Descensus Averno’’ they are tracks that you survive, lean yet densely ridden affairs that make their form of death metal a putrid blast of fresh horrific air. The visceral sense of foreboding that is “Thou Hast Destroyed Thyself,” is thick and all-pervasive with an atmosphere that is tangible and sinister.

The sound is cavernous cloying and inescapable. Facilis Descensus Averno is a staggering debut that is complete in its vison to create audible darkness from which there is no escape. Saevus Finis have simultaneously re-invigorated a genre with their musical prowess and unique blend of horror and raw bleakness that is both exciting and terrifying. Disharmonious and full of ill intent, the atmosphere grows and infects the listener over its runtime and commands repeated listening. Recommended!
