Full high octane layered with raw emotion we get the band, Stepfather Fred, out of Germany bringing us their 6th studio album, “like the Sea – Constantly Moving | Constantly Drowning”. Distributed by El Puerto Records. Released 29 October 2021
The band has had guitarist and drummer changes but now consists of Sebastian Schuster (Vocals), Simon Bihlmayr (Guitars), Matthias Gaßner (Bass), and Julius Dollinger (Drum/Piano).
On presentation the album cover is simply done with a medieval calligraphic font on a darkened image of a sea I think most people would want to avoid. This could open some philosophical discussions regarding the nature of the situation and how to survive. Are you a strong swimmer or just feel like drowning? The music carries this emotion through with aplomb.
This is a band that might be good to see live as they talk about playing with “maximum heart blood”, which could probably be described as their maximum feeling pumping through their veins they find their spot, “always with full focus on the spot.”. Their music is energetic and strong but can swiftly move into calm sections. The opening track ‘Deep in my mind’ incorporates all of this from the get-go with a groovy rock intro, throaty vocals, soft mellow sections before being slathered in rock solos. Though not many solos are encountered on the album with more an occasional squeal heard here and there.

In relation to finds their heartfelt spot they made headlines at the St. Gallen Open Air Festival, Switzerland in 2018 when they simple drove straight into the festival sporting a stage on a trailer and performed two songs in the middle of the crowd \m/
With the dropped tuned guitars you get a powerful resonance to the guitars. ‘If she falls’, ‘Wenga’ and ‘NoTruth for You’ all carry some epic carnage-inducing riffs. Throughout the album, they seem mixed to calm with aggressive. Ironically, ‘Firework’ has is a rather slow-paced song.

Getting to the top of the initial climb of a rollercoaster builds a lot of tension and makes the drop that much more exciting. I felt that through the album there seemed to be a regular amount of these spots midway through the ride. Sometimes the slower sections could still be in the same sort of vein as the initial drop and not slow down entirely. ‘Followers’ seemed to follow this while ‘If she falls’ slows things down midway.
Sebastian’s vocals have the particular characteristic to it that you will pick out from any others. He carries his soft relatively well and then we go into the stronger deeper parts he carries a particular throaty growl. ‘ I am the sea’ will have you singing along with gusto in no time.
Their style carries them along a rock, new-age progressive path with elements inspired by the sounds of others. Their songs have been well put together and constructed to ensure that produce something that covers all they felt will please their audience.
