The Slow Death – Siege (Album Review)

Australian doom band, The Slow Death have just released their album titled Siege. The Sydney based band formed in 2007 and this is their fourth full-length album.

The first track Tyranny is a 19-minute song that takes 3 minutes to get to the vocals. It’s a bold move that could make some impatient listeners skip ahead but once the vocals kick in it was worth the wait.

The female vocalist has a voice that’s a mix of being haunting and crystal clear. Tyranny has everything from galloping pace to slowing right down and showing the bands diversity.

The next track Famine starts off with melodic guitar fingerpicking with the vocals coming in very early compared to the last track. The soft beginning doesn’t last as it goes straight into heavier distorted guitars. The guitars are very Metallicaesque in this song.

Pestilence is next up and has a similar atmosphere to Famine, which I assume was on purpose as they’re two of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. The last and shortest song of Siege is Ascent Of The Flames. Gets into screaming vocals pretty quickly after a dark, distorted intro. It keeps the same pace and atmosphere throughout the whole song.

The track that stands out for me is Tyranny, as it gives the listener a very good idea of who The Slow Death are and what they can do.

The Slow Death is a band that knows their potential and are strong in all areas. The only thing that could hold up The Slow Death is the length of their songs. With none of the songs on Siege being less than 10 mins, it can put first-time listeners off getting through the songs all in one go.

For fans of Metal, Doom Metal and Death Metal.
