I Built the Sky – The Zenith Rise (Album Review)

I Built the Sky - The Zenith Rise

I Built the Sky released The Zenith Rise on November 1st, 2019. Melbourne based I Built the Sky is also known as Ro who can only be described as a conductor, having built such an album. This is the third album I Built the Sky has released.

The album begins with Up into the Ether. This track is a solid opening track that paints a broadly brushed picture of what the rest of the album holds.

The second track, Journey to Aurora, builds well and is catchy. The third track Wormhole Trave begins to show the versatility in the sound of I Built the Sky. With heavy and quite technical riffs, this track is perhaps the best on the entire album.

Tracks four, five and six are Stellar Evolution, Light Pillars and Stars and Darkness. It is in the middle of this album the broader Prog Metal and Rock scene comes into the frame.

I Built the Sky builds tracks well and can create incredible atmospheric moments within songs. However, it is by the middle of the album that some of the riffs begin to sound similar.

Tracks seven, eight, nine and ten are: The Zenith Rise, The Only Way out is Up, Diamond Dust and Moonbow. These are all good instrumental/prog metal tracks that contain great ambient interludes and exemplify an exceptional compositional piece, ultimately conducted by one person. This is a nice album, for someone who has never listened to I Built the Sky, Intervals or Modern Day Babylon before. There is something in this album for everyone but just not enough for me.
