Torpedo – Silently Blown (EP Review)

Torpedo is a thrash metal band founded in 2017, from Fes, Morocco, with multiple influences, ranging from old school Bay Area thrash metal to the new revival wave of thrash metal of the 2010s, with a consequent pinch of groove.

Silently Blown is an EP full of character and identity, a style full of assurance and a kickass attitude that only confirms the stage performances of a band that’s so energetic both live and in-studio recordings.

The EP kicks in with a very straightforward thrash masterpiece, that makes you run away in circles inside the moshpit.

A very well balanced tune that lets you breathe through melodious harmonies and solos full of virtuosity, only to stomps again on your face in very brutal breaks.

Here we are already in the middle of a short EP that leaves you craving more Torpedo, and the second track, Crusader is a lesson in heaviness: a very fat bass opens it up, before throwing you into a very thick guitar chugs which are underlined by a greasy distorted tone. This track shows the full potential of the band’s frontman, as he can balance between thrashy shouts and a very low type of singing that suits the nature of this track.

And before you know it, the EP’s end is closing in, but what else is better to close it than an old school thrash banger, and here again the vocals stand out as this track displays a more melodious type of singing, and the band’s maturity at such a young age is only confirmed by the smoothness of this song’s structure, as you’re thrown into a breakdown which makes you destroy the place with intensity, and a catchy singing line that makes the crowd sing altogether in communion « Beware of the Keeper of Madness »

The production is very decent, considering that the band’s work is all DIY, all homemade, yet very clean, precise, as every component of the song has its right place. The band confirms its powerful start with this EP and gives the promise of a bright future.
