Descent – Towers of Grandiosity (Album Review)

There are some releases you listen to that give you a sense the musicians in the band aren’t concerned about rules. They’re happy to tread the line between genres and just make music that makes sense to them. This is the feeling I get when I listen to Towers of Grandiosity by Descent, and what a powerhouse of a release it is.

This release is an eclectic mix of hardcore, punk, death metal and grind and it just tickles my fancy.

Tower of Grandiosity is absolutely tough as nails, unapologetic, energetic and a complete powerhouse of a release that will tear your face off. If you played this loud enough for the neighbour’s neighbour to hear, the police will understand, because it’s Towers of Grandiosity by Descent, and they’d probably join you at your next bbq.

The short tracks keep the music punchy, and the way each track collides into the next demands the audience listens to more than just a few tracks.

The rawness of the guitars give this recording an authentic feel and the lack of polish in the recording can be forgiven when you have such balls in your music.

The slow sections are absolutely filthy, and the fast sections create an impenetrable cacophony of sound. I’m a huge fan of Oliver’s raw vocal performance and Sugden’s tight unrelenting drum work. Look, it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re looking for a release that is in your face aggressive, you can’t go past it. A hugely awesome release. Suitable for those who eat nails for breakfast.
