Ultra Raptor – Tyrants (Album Review)

Ültra Raptör is a speed metal band from Canada formed in 2015, releasing their self-titled E.P. in 2018. The band’s first full-length album ‘Tyrants’ was released in 2021.

Speed and power are the driving force behind Ültra Raptör‘s debut album – an album that offers ten red hot scorching songs over a ferocious forty-five minutes! The pace doesn’t dip for a single second, starting with one hundred percent ferocity, courtesy of the opening song ‘Missile (Metal Warrior)’. And just like a missile, ‘Missile (Metal Warrior)’ is extremely fast, speeding through the air with ease, heading for its target with deadly accuracy – and in the case of the song, the target is the heavy metallers’ heart! ‘Cause, that’s exactly where Ültra Ratptör aims with their opening salvo – and boy do they score a direct hit. The pace and power of ‘Missile (Metal Warrior)’ are incredible…

…and doesn’t relent either. ‘Cybörg-Rex’ picked up the baton and stormed forth in a blaze of exploding incendiary devices. The explosive doubleheader of Ültra Raptör‘s debut has been electrifying! I really hope the band can keep this pace up for the entire album?

And as ‘Take Me Back’ explodes into life and hurtles forth with more aggression than heard so far, the answer is a deafening yes! ‘Take Me Back’ is almost as fast as the speed of light, with the mosh pit die-hards flexing their neck muscles further than ever before. This is gonna be one helluva neck workout for sure – just make sure you warm up properly beforehand… ‘An Offering To The Tyrant’ actually reduces the blistering speed to a more traditional heavy metal pace. However, the album’s overall aggressive nature remains firmly intact, with the band’s singer Phil T. Lung’s venomous raspy belt a fearsome sound.

With a title that sounds like an eighties bloody slasher movie, ‘Nightslasher’ is a ferocious high-velocity rampage. The electrifying pace the album began with is back in full flight, speeding faster than a bullet, enraged and full of anger – ‘Nightslasher’ is a terrifying gallop full of venom and menace…and holy fuck that last second made me jump! ‘Gale Runner’, amazingly brings an ounce or two of melodic metal to the album, although Ültra Raptör maintains the album’s fierce intensity and force. The barrage of metal emanating from ‘Tyrants’ is savage, the soaring vocals and screaming guitars fuelling the fire and brimstone explosions – explosions that are gonna be heard all over the world! Opening with a classic NWOBHM sounding guitar riff, ‘The Quest For Relics’ proceeds to gather momentum to become a high-velocity gallop of ferocious firepower. The incredible speed of ‘The Quest For Relics’ will turn the worldwide mosh pits into a furious frenzy of banging heads!

Two-thirds through, and the album takes on the melodic metal persona once more – ‘Winds Of Vengeance’ highly reminiscent of the early eighties pace and feel of bands such as Accept, Judas Priest, and (countrymen) Anvil. Ültra Raptör has nailed the traditional heavy metal sound well and truly on the head with ‘Winds Of Vengeance’ – a melodic breather ahead of the album’s final stretch. The final stretch begins with the high-speed thrasher ‘Caustic Shower’Ültra Raptör blending the ferocious elements of thrash with their own speed metal ferocity. The final song on the album is the intriguingly titled ‘Space Fighter (442 Alpha Class Pegasus Sub C35.2)’… The fastest of the more melodious songs on offer, ‘Space Fighter’ is also the heaviest metal sounding of all the songs on the album – an album that has impressed, excited, and delighted. Now, where’s the reply button…

Overall, a ferocious fire and brimstone rampage of high-velocity heavy metal, ‘Tyrants’ is a superb debut.
