UNDER ATTACK - Fury Of The Thunder God

Under Attack are a heavy metal band from Sweden formed in 2012 by Bjorn Thorup as a part-time project. In 2018, however, the project became a full-time band, with the debut album ‘Fury Of The Thunder God’ released in 2023.

And Sweden does it again! Producing yet another barnstorming and bombastic heavy metal outfit – Under Attack is the latest band to emerge from a country famed for meatballs, Ikea, Volvo, Abba, and many incredible metal bands! It really feels like we’re under attack by one of the best heavy metal producing countries in the world – Under Attack getting their debut album underway with the explosive ‘Torture’s Too Kind’. Fast-paced and fairly ferocious, ‘Torture’s Too Kind’ echoes the classic gallop of old school, traditional heavy metal, banging heads hard wherever it’s played or heard. Under Attack has certainly launched its debut with pace, purpose and intent!

This is maintained with ‘Where The Axeman Laughs’ – the iconic “foot on the monitor” feel rising high, very high. As do clenched fists, punching the air in delight, the band brings forth a forty year old sound pioneered by legends such as Saxon, Raven, Iron Maiden and Angel Witch. These four bands and many others are responsible for the heavy metal sound we all love and listen to today – Under Attack matching the sound beat for the beat! And as the band move swiftly on, methinks this will be a gallop from start to finish – ‘Burning Metal’ picking up the baton and sprinting off into the distance. Has heavy metal lost its appeal is something I hear quite often – no fucking way I say!

Especially with bands like Under Attack laying down an album such as this. Heavy metal ain’t going anywhere – heavy metal is here to stay! And the harder and faster the better as far as I’m concerned – the album rumbling on with the bustling ‘Dawn Of Fire’. And to be honest, the band’s overall sound reminds me a lot of Grim Reaper, with Under Attack‘s singer sounding a little bit like Steve Grimmett (R.I.P.) – a legendary figure in heavy metal!

And keeping their feet firmly planted on the monitors, the band roared on with the feisty ‘Night Of The Sniper’, oozing with pace, power and energy. The energy that began at sky-high levels and hasn’t dropped one single bit – until the title song ‘Fury Of The Thunder God’ crashes in, adopting the heavy-hitting anthemic style of bands such as Manowar, Sabaton, and new kids on the block All For Metal. and Brothers Of Metal. So prepare for a colossal barrage of rabble-rousing call to arms metal, as ‘Fury Of The Thunder God’ (the song) resonates with devastating oomph and oof – and raise your fists high in the air to salute the “fury of the thunder god”. What a song! Under Attack resumes their blistering heavy metal roller coaster with the menacingly titled ‘Meatgrinder’ – the incredibly melodious side of the band rising to the surface. In fact, every song heard so far has been immensely melodic, the band delivering infectious heavy metal at its most enjoyable!

And with only three songs left to go, the band still have as much energy as they did when the album began – maybe even more! ‘Stabbed With A Knife’ explodes into life, racing off at high velocity, banging heads faster than ever before. And more violently, too! With such a breathtaking aura, have Under Attack just muscled their way into contention for the Album Of The Year title? Maybe, just maybe! And raise your fists high once again, the band returning the old school flavour with the heavy-hitting yet melodic ‘The Beast Shall Rise’ – with every single band member planting their feet firmly on the monitors. Maybe not the drummer, though, but definitely everyone else! And bringing a breathless album to a close, ‘As Abaddon Strike’ takes off at full tilt, with more pace, urgency and purpose than any other song on offer. The speed of ‘As Abaddon Strike’ is phenomenal, rounding off a sparkling debut album.

Overall, an infectious and highly melodic heavy metal gallop with immense head-bang ability.
