Upside Downside (Australia)

Metal-Roos: When did you start?
My brother Kyle and I first started Upside Downside in 2008 as a school band participating in all the school competitions and writing our own songs. We had another school band we would perform with to get a full band performance, since we only had one guitarist and a singer. We got introduced to Nugget in early 2009 by another musician. At first he played bass because we didn’t have a bass player but after a while of searching for a full line up we got introduced to Kye and Daniel from another musician that is friends with the boys father. Kye replaced Nug on the bass so Nug jumped back onto the guitar. We wrote our first song together ‘Brick to the Face’ and started writing song’s for an EP. We played our first show in February 2010 at Rosie’s Tavern then went on to play several shows all throughout QLD that year and releasing our 1st Ep in November supporting Dreamkillers at the Jubilee Hotel. After the release of the EP we started doing shows a lot more regularly and getting on a few local festivals in 2011 and 2012. We completed the line up in early 2013 with Jaymes as our 3rd Guitarist and then we went on to touring and playing local festivals throughout the east/south coast of Australia.

Metal-Roos: Is there a story behind your name?
To be honest, not really. We just wanted something unique and different.

Metal-Roos: What’s your favourite song to play live?
We have heaps of new song’s that always gets your head banging. We play them every now and then at our live shows but we don’t really have any names for them yet so we call them Song 1, Song 2 etc.

Metal-Roos: What was the band at Neck Wreck you most enjoyed seeing?
In Death played an amazing set that night. We loved watching their performance as everything they do is so tight.

Metal-Roos: Do you have any recordings coming up?
We have previously recorded 2 EPs and a full length album but we have only released 1 EP because we believe we still haven’t captured our sound on any recordings so far. We are currently writing songs for a full length album but we might release a single beforehand for a preview of our sound.

Metal-Roos: Any touring plans?
We’re going to take a bit of a break from playing live shows to get a few new songs up and running but we have already started booking out April/May for our first tour then hopefully a full length tour at the end of the year.

Metal-Roos: How do you arrange song writing in such a large band?
It’s still something we are always experimenting with and we try to make each song unique. We usually start with the rhythm then the main melody, move onto the drums and bass once the lyrics are added. Then you can find the solo sections and add a bit more melody to make the song more interesting.

Metal-Roos: Thoughts on the Australian metal scene?
There are a lot of talented bands in Australia and the Metal scene in is getting bigger slowly. If you work hard enough and get your music out to the public you will find there are a lot of metal heads out there willing to mosh.

Metal-Roos: Influences?
Our main influences are Pantera, Dethklok, Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, Cannibal Corpse and Metallica.

Metal-Roos: Favourite Australian bands?
There’s so many good Australian bands out there but our 10 most favourite that we played with and saw in 2013 are Psycroptic, King Parrot, 4 Arm, Portal, Recoil v.o.r, Lord, Dreamkillers, Frankenbok, Ouroboros, Orpheus Omega.

Metal-Roos: Dream gig?
We would really love to play at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany.
