Vipassi, the instrumental Metal band from Melbourne, Australia, released their first album, “Lightless”. The name of the band comes from the twenty-second of the twenty-eight Buddhas.
It’s almost like meditation music. The quartet plays their instruments lightly, carefully and precisely as they ignite their debut album with the title track “Lightless”. Drums turn into a killing machine, kind of an Extreme Metal style. The atmosphere of the other instruments just keeps up for this incredible journey.
Fretless bass is sweet on the second track “Labyrinthine Hex”. It has so many contrasts, at times can be solid or faded. These contrasts would drive you through various emotions like joy or despair.
“Morningstar” is easily the “happy song”. Harsh connections spread energy with their dynamic guitar and hard drums until they vanish into the final breath.
Beyond and on the edge stands “Shapshu”, a track that gives the audience some vitality, delivered with the most dedicated passion for their art.
“Phainesthai” is the next track and means “to seem,” or “to appear” in Greek. As you are hearing the complex keys, this word is used in philosophy, so it is as complex as the music. Overwhelming are the satisfying guitar and bass solos for the entire song.
The feeling is calm in the first part of “Ruination Glow”, yet it bursts when you least expect it.
Cosmic and folkish style has “Neon Rain”. The musicians keep composure in a song that evolves into a Progressive Metal madness.
A grand finale is expected with “Promethea”. Make some time and be free within the next 10 minutes and 45 seconds to appreciate the labyrinthine textures and different layers that humans can perceive. The recommendation is to stay focused until the end, as you enjoy the serene, peaceful and pacific moment.
With “Lightless”, Vipassi accomplished one of their missions, because of the band name: “etymologically, has its roots in clear vision – a being of extreme contemplation”. Nevertheless, the Melbourne quartet has introduced to the world a record merging and bending sounds as far as you can imagine.
