WE BUTTER THE BREAD WITH BUTTER – Das Album (Album Review)

Now, here is something different for your ears. We Butter The Bread With Butter (the most random name ever) is an Electronicore band from Germany. If you are not at all familiar with this type of music, it basically has a Metalcore/Deathcore base with electronic music elements thrown in the mix, and in the case of this particular band, many other weird elements are thrown in that pot too. Safe to say, if you are exclusively a fan of TRVE metal subgenres, there is a high possibility you will not like this band and this album…….but if you’re still with me, and you are open to different and more mainstream sounds in your metal, then you are in for a fun ride.

WBTBWB (sick acronym!) is not a new band by any means, as they have been consistently releasing albums for the last 10 years or so, and after a few lineup changes where the original vocalist Tobias Schultka returned after many years of absence, and the rest of the band except founding member and guitarist/synth programmer Marcel Neumann left, they are back with “Das Album”, a quirky, brutal, irreverent and at times an overwhelming collection of songs. WBTBWB reminds me in many ways of German veterans Knorkator, not in their musical style per se, but in their irreverence and their hilarious approach to the metal genre and all the crazy things you can get away with while playing it if you know how to. Lyrics are often satirical or downright bizarre, and the musical soundscapes can go from commercial dance-floor sounds to chaotic blast beats and stomach-churning guttural vocal deliveries.

“Das Album” opens with the aptly named “Intro”, a minute-long electro track with Kraftwerk influences that can be easily skippable. “Dreh Auf!” is next, and we are immediately treated to a chunky and jumpy Industrial riff and a very catchy vocal line. This song is thoroughly enjoyable and a very good example of the overall abilities and experiments this band is capable of, kind of like a 3 minutes mini album showcase. A very good opening main tune in my opinion. “20 kmh” is next, and this one is a banger. The headbanger intro riff leads to one of the most earwormy and silly choruses I’ve heard in a long time. Very well executed breakdowns, precise riffing and some very weird vocal choices add some contrast too.

This song is party metal at its best. “N!CE” comes right after, and this slower and chuggier song brings the pace down a bit. It has some decent atmospheres and 2000’s Nu metal influences, but it lacks the energy of the killer’s first 2 songs. “Schreibwarenfachverkäufer” is next. (gotta love those super long German words). This song reminds me of Motionless in White in its main riff and Nu metal/goth atmosphere. It is a good song all in all. “Lauft” starts right after with a very obnoxious intro.

This one is a faster song again, with some clear Hardcore influences, but the annoying samples used in the middle section make this one a song I’m happy to skip. “Jump n’ Run” starts with a super catchy Synthwave line that soon turns into a pretty awesome riff and some Chip Tune leads that fit perfectly. I love the contrast between the very melodic leads and the craziness of the blast beats in the verse. The chorus is a massive highlight too. I bet this song is amazing live.

Next is “Sprich Sie Einfach An”, and I’m not sure about this one. The first half sounds like a weird Billie Eilish offtake with weird vocal sounds, but the 2nd half comes down like a hammer with a sick breakdown section and a very solid vocal delivery. You make up your own mind about this odd track. “Meine Finger Sind Zu Klein” is next with its very industrial riffing and drumming. It is probably one of the least experimental and more straightforward Deathcore songs in the album. It works well as a buffer track after an onslaught of weirdness and quirky experiments. “Piks Mich” comes next and we are back to the weird with the sound of a buzzing insect as an intro. This one has a very clear melodic Metalcore influence, with good riffing and an extremely catchy chorus. “Metal” is a highlight track for me. I love the Trancecore elements in the first seconds and the riff that comes after. It is a very fast-paced song with an awesome middle section and some seriously mean breakdowns. “Angriff Der Donerteller” is next, and this one much like the opening track manages to combine very well a lot of the elements that make this band quite unique into a single song. Das Album comes to an end with “Letzter Song”, a very interesting choice. This track is more harmony-driven than the rest of the album and it boasts some of its best melodic compositions as well. It is strangely melancholic and addictive.

In general a very good closer for a very unique album.

The production in “Das Album” is crystal clear, sometimes even too much in my opinion, as the Pop approach to it might undermine the crunchiness of the guitars sometimes, but no one can argue that this is a very well put together an album, especially considering it is mostly the work of 2 people. WBTBWB is not a band that everyone in the metal will enjoy, that is for sure. But if you enjoy electronic sounds and are keen to listen to something a bit different and more experimental then “Das Album is a very fun and varied listening experience. The 2nd half of the album is clearly more conservative than the absolutely bonkers 1st half, but if you like a bit of core and electro in your metal, then there will be something for you here.
