No Sympathy for a Rat is all about the slow groove riffs, distorted, harsh and abrasive. Ya̧nomamö have produced a Sludge Ridden Doom Album that you didn’t know you needed, until now.
Overall, No Sympathy for a Rat is a brutal record exploring dark lyrical themes of hatred and despair. An aggressive ‘all is a lost attitude’ is brought to life through a combination of slow/fast tempo emphasising heavy psychedelic groove-filled rhythms.
Hearing the ringing guitar and bass tones and riffs bring to mind clear origin influences of heavy metal, particularly Black Sabbath.
The vocalist has a guttural deep range, I would go as far as to compare it to a death metal vocal quality, with the mournful growls often associated with sludge and doom.
This is all pulled together by thick, heavy, slamming drums
Ya̧nomamö have produced a brutal doom-filled half-hour record packed with raw, emotion-filled vocals, groove-driven riffs, yet it leaves me pining for something more.
I rate No Sympathy for a Rat by Ya̧nomamö 4 out of 5 roos, but instead of roos, let’s make it 4 psychedelic doom rats.
