Headbore (Australia)

Metal-Roos: How did Headbore form?
Mate, it was a few blokes at the footy club. We all played together and a few of us liked metal so we decided to get together and start playing some songs. I’m all honesty, it was pretty ordinary, just hanging out drinking some beers, listening to metal. Just kinda evolved from that. I played in a nu-metal band back in the 90’s and mate its just slowly progressed on from there.

Metal-Roos: So has the band had a steady line up?
Yeah, absolutely it’s been me and my brother Luke on guitars, so you know that’s a pretty strong bond. Wardy, I grew up with him since I was 17 loving metal, so he’s in the band. The cool thing is Daisy our drummer was i na punk band and Dan our bass player was in another band. We were their second band for a time, side project kinda thing. Those two bands broke up and now we’re all in Headbore together. It’s worked out really well.

Metal-Roos: So when you were playing footy together, was this still in high school?
Yeah man, the first time I met Wardy, I had a Metallica top on, he had a Slayer top at footy training and one day I had a guitar and was playing an old school Metallica cover “Am I Evil” . He picked it straight away, and I asked ‘how the hell did you know that?’. So I asked him around another night and started hanging out, playing some Sepultura covers on guitars and that.

Metal-Roos: It’s funny how things work out, on my way to another gig the other night I saw another bloke in between all the suits wearing a metal top and that little nod we gave each other, you know that sign of brotherhood.
Yeah your right, there can be 40 blokes on a footy field. One has a metal top on and you’re instantly drawn to each other and you want to find out, ‘hey I play guitar let’s have a jam’ and that’s how the whole thing started out.

strong>Metal-Roos: Headbore played a new tunes tonight, so is there new material coming out soon then?
Yeah mate, we released our first album in November and we almost finished our fourth new song for the new album, jamming it out. Ah, we are so ridiculously pumped and excited, the amount of songs we are writing in between playing shows.

Metal-Roos: So “Strength in Numbers” is your first release?
Yeah, Strength in Numbers album… we had a lot of arguments whether we release an EP or an album to start with. We had then enough material to release an album, so why not. But we took a long time recording with Andy at against the grain. We are happy now we went that way and released the album instead of an EP.

Metal-Roos: So how have you seen New Dead so far?
Mate, brilliant absolutely brilliant, what Jason from Truth Corroded has done for organising this show is completely off tap; the promotion, the fact that we played at 1:40 in the afternoon and had a packed room – I couldn’t have imagined that.

Metal-Roos: So would you consider these bands to be some of the cream of Australian metal?
You got from Adelaide Truth Corroded and Sebonkira. You have King Parrot and Harlott from Melbourne, LORD from Sydney and Vanishing Point, Claim the Throne from Perth Mate, to me this and Soundwave are the two best days of the year and especially with the line up Jason has as managed to get together – unreal! Even if we weren’t playing today, we would still be here. We all came last year as a band and I have seen so many other guys from other bands here today. It’s all about supporting Australian metal.

Metal-Roos: Finally Blacken the Earth (in Alice Springs)’what was that experience like?
Interesting man! I liken it to the Wild West at time – we would be drinking at a pub and after a few pints some dude with a python comes in and throws it on the table. So now I’m finishing off my beer and holding a snake. The gig itself was an outdoor event held at the back of the RSL and playing with bands like Frankenbok, Desecrator. Outstanding, I just had a ball up there, the passion those young guys have… most have never heard us before and they were coming up to us and asking questions and appreciating the passion they have.

Metal-Roos: And Pirate?
Oh, Pirate… the work he is doing up there absolutely brilliant, he is a great bloke. And hardworking, doing a lot for the metal scene in the Territory.

Metal-Roos: Well, thank you very much mate, much appreciated.
Cheers, Mate.
