I would like to start this review by paying my respects to Cryptic Scorn’s fallen bass player Jay Ramirez who suddenly passed away on the 10th of March this year!

This Sydney-based band has been carving and evolving their own unique sound bursting boundaries with a mix of old-school thrash, down-tuned savagery, and grindcore style of “Cabs” on rhythm guitars. From the outset this EP cannot be pigeonholed; the opening track “Just Unjust” reminds me of one time Australian exports Damaged – both in sound and vocally – with punchy straight to your face lyrics. There is some great guitar work on this track which must be noted at the 1:35 mark when a mean breakdown erupts. Track 3 “Mental Necromancer” is a lesson in Speed/Thrash Metal and lightning-fast drumming. Now here is where the EP takes a sudden and dramatic turn: Track 4 “Not Enough” slows in pace with raspy vocals that seem odd and out of place.
Track 5 “Burn” is also slow in pace with clean sorrow-ridden vocals – that is until the 1-minute mark. Then this takes flight and if I’m honest, unfortunately, there isn’t a lot to grab the listener’s attention. Track 6 “Mental Necromancer version 2” has some interesting use of atmospherics to kick off and that is where it stops, unfortunately. For me, I didn’t find any standout tracks and it’s a real shame.

Maybe in a live setting in a small club, this may be a different beast altogether?
