Path of Destruction has given us their five-track EP Comin For You, and they have given us an old-school sound with a new, fresh, clean feel. A sound of clear direction and style, a real nod to a style of music from a decadent place and era without all the over-the-top rubbish that went with it. This is just good decent metal with a sound that has always survived. Although the look and feel of the album is nothing like it there is a real sunset strip sound to it all. With good catchy choruses, easily remembered and repeated lyrics with stories of being rebellious and having a good time.
The vocals by Tom Liddall are clean, rock n roll, and to the point, with just enough gravel to be classed as metal. Sometimes the lyrics are a little on the corny side but I think that sort of goes with the territory of this style.
With metal of this honesty, the guitars should be and are the heroes of the recording. They are well played, crunchy and heavy when called for and keep the band focused on what’s important for their music. Great rhythms provide plenty of toe-tapping experience thanks to Brodie Stevenson on bass with Jayden Varner pounding a clear path of destruction with his excellent drumming.
On those excellent guitars are Alex Zegelin and Jason Styles with some really good solos in particular on What You Got. Comin For You and, Shocked and Appalled are the two standout tracks here for me. Comin For You is catchy good old-fashioned heavy metal and lives up to the task as the title track, but for me Shocked and Appalled is the winner, a heavy crunching riff, a touch of meanness to it, and just an overall great performance by everyone. Really good song.
There are no real weak songs but What You Got is perhaps saved by the excellent solo or perhaps that may have fallen into that category. I find the song not very original and a bit corny with lyrics I have heard in many other songs. Doesn’t bring down the rest of the album too much though. Overall Path of Destruction has made a very good EP with a rock-solid performance by everybody and a strong foundation to build on. I have no trouble recommending this album to everyone, especially those who were around in the 80s.
