Having different genres living in perfect harmony is an extremely difficult thing to do in music, but when it is done well, my hat (if I ever wore one) would be doffed to the band that could pull it off. In this instance, Jinjer’s latest EP release Micro fits the bill. It is complex, interesting and well crafted; so much that you would struggle to find a release that is more eclectic than this.
The first track Ape gets straight into it; it is probably the heaviest and most diverse track on the release. The thing you notice most is the fact that each instrument is interesting and well suited to this style. All of the musicians are accomplished and bring something unique to the mix, and the production quality is exceptionally well done with nothing out of place. While each instrument can offer something in its own right, Tatiana’s vocals are extremely strong and serve as the centrepiece.

Both the death growls and the clean vocals fit well in the mix and detail a mastery of a skill.
I have to also mention the storytelling element. It will appeal to some listeners, but this is a difficult one and an interesting choice is given their focus on melding genres. Traditional forms of death or progressive metal really take a back seat in this release, but I do hear a nod to some of the more traditional elements. This serves to gain the attention and appreciation of seasoned listeners of progressive and death alike. Could Jinjer be the missing piece between the two causing harmony in town somewhat distinct genres? Time will tell. Suitable for those who like the fact that fruit loops added those ugly blue hoops.
