Agrypnie – Metamorphosis (Album Review)

Metamorphosis Is the 9th release from Germanys Agrypnie

Agrypnie is a tricky beast indeed. And whilst Metamorphosis offers a transformation of a sort there is an awful lot to digest over its lengthy running time (68 minutes) it is at times a confounding, frustrating release.

I love bands that bring everything to the table and Agrypnie bring everything! From huge dissonant waves that disorientate and undulate, large symphonic orchestral elements, black metal, post-black metal, doom, thrash it’s all here and presented with excellent musicianship, the results however are mixed, a potential unfulfilled, just when an element needs more exploring it’s off to the next style. The production is clear and precise yet at times the harsh vocals threaten to overtake the proceedings

When it works it’s excellent. ‘’Wir Ertrunkenen’’ is superb, blackened death with an electronic subtlety. “Melatonin” and “Untergang” combine furious riffs and blast beats along with some great post passages. This is unique in execution and some of the gentler quieter moments deserve to be pursued along with the more brutal sections.

Is it too much? Metamorphosis is certainly interesting and that’s before we touch upon the lyrical themes of philosophy and introspection. It is an incredibly demanding and yet at times incredibly rewarding effort that requires your full attention.
