Allfather, the new album by the Danes in Vanir, is a terrific array of music pieces that pay homage to the ways of Vikings and Norse mythology; and let’s not forget drinking – lots of drinking. I have to be honest, when I see themed bands like this, I tend to believe they are pretty gimmicky. But I must say, after a few tracks I was ready to brandish my axe and shield and spill the blood of whatever Christian was in my way.
The production value is very very good. The mix sits well and everything can be heard – nothing in this release falls awkwardly on my ear which is fantastic.

Håkan’s vocals are pretty much what you would expect from a release like this and they suit the mix well.

However, I would like to see the power vocals in the ballad track Fejd done away with – but that’s a personal preference sort of thing, just skip it if it bothers you. Some of the choruses could rival Iron Maiden’s Heaven Can Wait for monotonous repetition, but they’re catchy, and in a live setting there would be room for them to breathe. Other elements of the tracks are to die for; the introduction to Ironside (in fact the whole track Ironside) is fantastically tragic. The acoustic guitars in Bearer of the Word provide a terrific interlude to a well thought out album, and overall, it’s just a fun release.
Fans of the band and the genre will not be disappointed. Suitable for those who know that Vikings didn’t have horns on their helmets.
