AMNESSIA ETERNA – Malditos (Album Review)

Amnessia Eterna is a thrash metal band from Chile formed in 2016 releasing their debut album ‘Malditos‘ in 2021.

Amnessia Eterna arrives on the thrash metal scene with a bang, kicking the door down and forcing old school, the eighties thrash metal upon you. Aggressive and in your face, ‘Malditos’ (the album) delivers eleven songs over forty-five minutes – all coming to life with ‘Caminos’ – a gentle one-minute crescendo caresses the senses, before unfolding into a blistering cacophony of thrash. ‘Caminos’ proves that no matter the language, metal is universal, and understood by fans the world over. Picking up the pace, ‘Lujuria’ is harder hitting than the previous song, combining traditional heavy metal with the melodic style of thrash. This combination makes for an infectious listen, and a helluva catchy chorus that is surely gonna be sung by an in concert crowd.

Blinding pace lights up the album in the mighty shape of ‘Desquiciado Pecador’, with mosh pits everywhere exploding with high energy headbanging. South American metal bands have traditionally been of the extreme, death, or thrashy nature, and Amnessia Eterna is seeking to carry on that tradition with their debut – which after just three songs is beginning to impress. The higher pace continues with the roaring ‘En busca del Poder’, forcing headbanging of the more frenetic nature to ensue. The old-school vibe is sprinkled all over the album, with enough modern-day input to attract fans of the younger, as well as the older generation. Doing away with the high-paced style of thrash, Amnessia Eterna adopts a mid-tempo heavy foot-stomping blend with ‘Initium’ – a highly infectious instrumental of sparkling musicianship.

The fastest song so far ‘Infierno’, comes charging out the blocks like a herd of stampeding rhino. The crushing crescendo of savage riffing is an aural pleasure and one to experience time and time again. ‘Infierno’ is a definite highlight, and sits proudly right in the middle of the album. A mellow intro breathes life into ‘Tan Solo’, and we find ourselves dropping into ballad country – somewhere we shouldn’t be anywhere near on a thrash metal album! But here we are, fighting the urge to replace our raised fists with lighters, and relinquish our headbanging exploits for a gentle sway from side to side. Amnessia Eterna does keep the riffs chunky, but I’m sorry to say, out of the albums eleven songs, ‘Tan Solo’ is the odd one out. And wow what a chugging riff ‘Falso Predicador’ offers – conjuring up similarities with The Almighty’s chugging riff on ‘Wrench’ (from the band’s 1994 album ‘Crank’). So addictive and so infectious, the chugging riff raises the hairs on my forearms and neck to new heights!

A mellow and serene guitar introduces ‘Desvanecidos’ – and remains for the entire two-minute duration. For ‘Desvanecidos’ is a short instrumental with a South American musical flavor. Full force thrash metal returns with the mid-paced and weighty ‘Todo cae’. The mid-tempo foot-stomper is fairly blunt and in your face, showing much more attitude than heard anywhere else on the album.

The final song, the title song. ‘Malditos’, is an all-out thrash metal romp, full of pace and (mild) aggression, with plenty of headbanging opportunities. The mosh pits will love this one.

Overall, a meld of thrash and traditional heavy metal, Amnessia Eterna‘s debut will appeal to a wide array of fans.
