Head In A Jar – Atomic Circus (EP Review)

Head In Jar

The Sydney metal scene has always been a bit of a hotbed for thrash metal, with the scene here giving birth to some of our country’s most important and widely recognized thrash acts. Casual listeners will know names like Slaughter Lord to Addictive, and of course the mighty Mortal Sin, but through the years the Sydney scene has been home to many other great thrash bands, some achieving more success than others. Today Sydney’s thrash scene is as strong as ever, with some amazing bands coming out of the woodwork.

Formed in 2011 with the still current line-up of Gordyn White (Guitar/Vocals), Nick Coady (Guitar/Vocals), Onni Hirvonen (Bass) and Adam Hopkins (Drums), the band play a fast and furious brand of thrash that never takes itself too seriously. 2012’s ‘Atomic Circus’ EP was the band’s first release to see the light of day, but is it a release worth your time?

The answer is most definitely! The production’s pretty rough, but the tracks contained are all outstanding. ‘Bloodsport’ opens the EP in fine form. With a riffset that reminds the listener of Testament in their early days and a beefy mid-paced bridge, this is a track guaranteed to get your headbanging. Judge Mental comes next and was a real treat for this reviewer. The composition here really brings to mind classic US thrashers Nasty Savage. The riffs may sound familiar to fans of that band, but Head In A Jar put enough of their own style into the track to keep things fresh. A short sharp thrash attack that grabs hold from the first notes and never lets up.

King Gnawicus is up next, the longest track on offer here. Opening with a slow, almost doomy passage, this one is a more mid-paced affair with some well placed speedy passages to keep things interesting. Probably the weakest track on this EP, but still a very solid offering, and it’s nice to see this band trying something a little different. The band’s eponymous track closes the proceedings here, a return to the faster tempos of the first two tracks. A good solid set of riffs and probably the catchiest chorus on the EP make sure that the proceedings end on a high.

For a first effort, this is a really strong release.

The band definitely have some strong songwriting chops, and the playing throughout is consistently tight. I look forward to hearing what these guys can put out with a proper studio production backing up their already proven abilities. If this short EP is anything to go by, A great release from a young band with loads of potential. Strongly recommended to all thrashers out there.
