Bezerker – Lost (Re-Issue Review)

Bezerker

Coming in for the kill – ephemeral Aussie progressive thrashers BEZERKER from Adelaide take off with a 30th-anniversary reissue of their one and only album LOST. Though unintentional, the album title fulfils its own prophecy as it stands alone, buried amongst underground bands, but has honourably and respectfully been brought back from the dead with attention well deserved.

LOST starts off blazing and shattering, like a kick to the face. Fast and loud is the genetic makeup of any thrash lover, and that’s exactly what LOST delivers. Each song tells a gruesome story, aside from their first track “Take All” which is politically driven – although this theme doesn’t show up again, LOST transports the listener to another world reigning with booming drums driving along blood-curdling riffs. The production is lo-fi, and the overall performance is precise.

Patrick Cummins’ vocals reach that higher register with pure passion, and the instrumentation at times – allows room for his vocals to shine even as he dives into growls. Each instrument takes the throne rightfully when called upon. Few acoustic sections occur sporadically as a nice melodic break. That’s when you know you’ve reached the eye of the storm, as it picks right back up to speed into drench distorted chunks of riffs and rolling rhythms.

LOST binds the listener who dares, so I dare you to lend BEZERKER an ear for just over an hour’s worth of old-school thrash metal delights.
