Bonehammer – Black Crust Invasion (Album Review)

Bonehammer - Black Crust Invasion

Bonehammer’s debut release Black Crust Invasion is a marrying of the NWOBHM and Bay area thrash metal. It’s a solid mix and music-wise, it hits some sweet spots. Some sections could have been on Iron Maiden’s Fear of the Dark, which pricks up the ears of this fan. The tone of the dirty guitar is probably a little old-sounding for a 2019 release, but the clean tone is absolutely spot on. Mixing is not too bad, but I would like to see more polish in the mid registers in the mastering of this album.

The part I struggled with the most is the ‘spoken/death’ voice. It essentially lacks power and needs something more to it. I hear a similar voice by Loki in Hybrid Nightmares or even Dani Filth in Cradle of Filth, but the execution isn’t there for me yet. That being said, the black metal voice that features less frequently, is far stronger and probably should feature more often.

Look, it could be a cultural thing, but the track Blues of Perversion is just not something I can see most of the metalheads I know enjoy. If you want to know my reason why have a listen to it. The structures of the songs show some promise.

Having shorter tracks for this sort of style is unusual, but I think works for what they are trying to accomplish. I’d like to see future releases straddle the line of progressive metal much like Metallica’s descent into progressive-thrash during the Master of Puppets and …And Justice For All phases. I see elements of what they could become, but there is some work to be done. Suitable for those who like to drink coffee in England.
