Bastardizer – Dawn of Domination (Album Review)

Bastardizer - Dawn of Domination

I realize that we’re late to the game on this one, but I’m going by the philosophy of, ‘better late than never, and to that end, let’s have a look at Bastardizer’s 2019 release, Dawn of Domination. These guys call themselves blackened thrash metal and they are completely true to form.

Aside from the intro which offers an interesting array of melodies and a sort of haunting charm, the album offers an unrelenting onslaught of thrash inspired riffage coloured with a black/death vocal that gives the whole package a strong edge. There is the occasional slow groove in some of the tracks that help to break up the album, but if you’re looking for a huge amount of thrashing energy that remains hard-hitting and interesting, look no further than this Sydney band’s latest offering. The performance is mostly accurate, but you can tell no one held their feet to the fire over this. I would say the same thing for production. The guitar tone is reminiscent of the 90s, with some reliance on highs to pierce the mix. The bass has some great elements and some time in the sun which is always good to see. Lyrically there are some interesting elements, but some of the lines are almost comical – but in a good way.

It almost calls metal out for what it really is with no apologies and no regrets. I love the effort and energy in this offering, as well as the down to earth Aussie charm, but this album shows me that the translation to a live setting would be more beneficial than sitting in my study listening to this through my faux studio speakers. Suitable for those who drink their coffee black and fast.
