Death Shroud - Death, Slavery, and the Pursuit ov Sadness

Death, Slavery, and the Pursuit ov Sadness is the fourth release from USBM duo Death Shroud that takes the primitive origins of the Virginia style and entrenches them in a seething cold dark aesthetic.

This is Black Metal as it is intended, brimming with violent tendencies and hints of esoterica, Death Shroud takes the black and white of their music and propels the listener into their underworld where only a few dark-minded souls will comprehend or understand the forces that are in motion.

‘’ Dreams That Haunt the Mind’’, ‘’ Pervasive Emptiness’’ and ‘’ I Walk Among You’’ simply revel in their raw Black metal fury that is at times as restless as it is relentless. ‘’ Putrefactio’’ is the satisfying instrumental closer that is only let down at times by the jarring percussion programming. Sterthanas and Malevictus are well schooled in traditional blasphemy yet are unafraid to explore new depths and adding synths and clean parts only adds to an overwhelming feeling of dread and despair. The music is tight precise, calculating, and unforgiving.

Death, Slavery, and the Pursuit ov Sadness is cold unwelcoming, and savage in its delivery. It may have been ten years between albums but none of the aggression and fierce loyalty to the true sound of raw black metal is lost.
