Ewigkeit – DISClose (Album Review)

Swelling with emotional discord while destroying any musical boundaries we might have had is the line that Ewigkeits latest release Disclose treads.

This release is nothing short of epically huge. An interesting blend of themes, with the core residing in black metal, but, the strongest part of this release is how well the ideas surrounding genre and the melding of sounds is expertly accomplished.

The attempt to create something very different to what is already out there is virtually impossible in this day in age, but I would say that Ewigkeit comes very close.

Performance-wise it is what you would expect. A shrieking black metal voice contrasted with a Townsend-esk clean epic vocal. Both are quite strong and do a great job of blending in with the mix. Some of the guitar sounds are like an old ZOOM pedal plugged directly into a computer’s sound card; the result is the droning sound of a black metal band.

This is further supported by keyboard string sounds that tend to take on and embellish the melodies introduced by the guitars. It is these deliberate acts to nod to the giants of metal music that makes this release somewhat familiar and easily accessible. I have to mention the melodies themselves because some of them are killer. Familiar in tone and emotion and not overused, which is a difficult thing to do when most of your tracks are over 6 minutes.

If you can forgive the sometimes ‘history lesson’ feel of the tracks, this album has a lot to offer. It is creative with individualistic flare; I doth my hat to Mr. Fog and his experimentation. Suitable for the metal head that wears a monocle.
