Illimitable Dolor – Leaden Light (Album Review)

Illimitable Dolor - Leaden Light

Funeral death/doom act Illimitable Dolor is coming in strong with their sophomore release Leaden Light from the metal-loving label Transcending Obscurity Records. Having not heard of these guys before, I thought I would try out their debut self titled LP so as to give myself an idea of what I’m in for and also get an insight into where the band began and what direction they are going in.

So with the debut leaving me in awe of what was to come from their latest effort, I dove into it headfirst.

The second release from the doom heavyweights is the five-track album Leaden Light and it is filled with emotion and an ambience that can only be described as dark and sombre. From the opening track Armed He Brings The Dawn through to the closing song 2. 12. 14. (an ode to a fallen member, I believe) I felt drawn into a space of pure melancholy bliss.

Whilst lost in a world of darkness and doom, I also began to feel that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

By the end of this 52-minute epic journey, I was left feeling glad Illimitable Dolor has accomplished what many have tried and failed in the world of doom metal.

The emotional rawness of Leaden Light is everything that a combination of doom metal and death metal should be. Song structures, guitar tones, lyrics and the overall playing capabilities of these musicians are second to none. In my humble opinion, Illimitable Dolor and the album Leaden Light will propel both into being unstoppable forces in the world of doom metal.
