Summit – Echoes of Aberration (EP Review)

The EP release Echoes of Aberration by Summit is one of the best examples of metalcore I have seen come out of NT of Australia. Cut You Open, a favourite track of mine, is the best example of the sombre and aggressive mix of this release.

Greenaway’s screaming vocals are mint, but I do find his clean voice will take a little getting used to.

They take centre stage on some of the tracks, which is a slightly different choice from other bands I have listened to in this genre. It serves as a point of difference, which might bold well for them in future releases. The breakdowns are nice and heavy, but not overused which is a good thing when you’re talking longevity, and there are some absolutely crushing riffs in this release.

The Atwill’s guitar sound is beautifully dirty and on point. The song structures are fairly standard, but I do like the tracks that build to an explosive peak, rather like watching a building come tumbling down just after they’ve built it. The production value also gets a big tick from me – mixed and mastered beautifully, which, for this style, is a must.

There are some interesting elements in this release, namely choice around kick drum placement and contrast in the guitars etc. but I do hope in a genre that is jammed packed with this, they are able to poke their heads out above and fly the flag for Australia. Suitable for those wishing to promote quality Aussie metal to the world.
