Scorched – Ecliptic Butchery (Album Review)

Heaviness can sometimes be in the eye of the beholder, but every now and then a band comes along and creates so many shades of heavy that you have to just stand in awe. This is the case for Scorched’s latest release, Ecliptic Butchery. They’re follow up to Echoes of Dismemberment doesn’t stop for breath. This is death metal at its heaviest; the guitars roar, the drums blister along and the vocals hug the lowest registry just as the death metal god intended, but there is one difference.

Where most death metal bands will sit with blast beats to showcase their heaviness, Scorched use them sparingly, choosing instead to showcase more thrashy beats that help bring shade to the dark parts of the music and make the heavier side seem even heavier. But this isn’t all. Scorched also employ some clever use of sludge or doom in their work, creating yet another dimension of heavy for us to wallow in.

One key facet that Scorched hit well is the unsettling feeling that many death metal bands try to attempt but fall short. Their music gives you that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Their solos are quite reminiscent of Slayer’s work (but with much more clarity) and all of the instruments are expertly played. The production is the only thing that lets it down, however, hardcore death metal fans will celebrate their decision to stay true to the death metal sound, but being 2018 now would be the time to begin polishing up this genre.
