Parkway Drive – Reverence (Album Review)

One of the greatest impacts that heavy metal has on us is the understanding of the ‘heavy’ thoughts and feelings that the writers are trying to communicate through sound.

Without this connection, metal just wouldn’t be metal, and when you are dabbling in a genre that enjoys some mainstream success, juggling both the heavy feels and mass appeal is no easy task, but Parkway Drive have given this a red hot go in their newest release Reverence.

The execution of the melody is terrific and very accomplished. Parkway offers a number of catchy sections and explores the light and shade in their music with some cross-overs in a genre that don’t feel out of place. Vocally this release is very engaging and I have to mention the production quality because it is through the roof. This release sounds massive, and with any luck, will be reproduced live as well.

Although this release is solid, there are some rockier elements that I struggle with. These moments tend to take this band away from metalcore and while I relish an exploration of genre, it begins to render the music as somewhat generic. With that being said, there are some very heartfelt moments and the distinct feeling that they have sweated on this release.

The heavy feel becomes strong and will be the main reason why Reverence can tread the line between underground metal enthusiasts and fans of alternative radio.
