Forgery – Edge of Perception (Album Review)

Forgery most recent offering Edge of Perception is a terrific blend of 80s old school thrash metal and a cacophony of metal elements. The result? A groove-laden release containing an old school Hetfield vibe with a death metal focus.

Edge of Perception is quite exploratory, and some of the interesting elements presented; clean guitar interludes, reliance on the ride, expert soloing; create an overall impressive feel.

But while there is a lot of shade in what Forgery do in this release, there is an overreliance on thrash inspired verses, and vocal structures that at times run into each other. I really dig the vocals overall, but I do feel they might be a sticking point for some listeners. The music calls for a gruffer sound which we receive a glimpse of in some tracks.

However, the camp of metalheads that aren’t keen on ‘cookie-monster-vocals’ will find this release massively heavy, and Forgery could serve as a gateway drug to heavier acts. It is the exploratory nature of the release that I respect the most. The pushing of boundaries and the introduction of new ways to create evil sounds is what will make Forgery stand out on their releases and in a live setting. The darkness is alive and well in this release.

The breakdowns, evil chords and the overall epic feel of the tracks put a big old smile on my face. Suitable for those who love early Metallica, but feel it’s just not evil enough.
