Forsaken Age – Heavy Metal Nightmare (Album Review)

Forsaken Age

When I picked this album to review I was aware of this bands epic nature from my friends over in their native New Zealand. I have a very deep love of NWOBHM as you all might know by now. For me, the birth of all modern metal derives from this oddly named genre of heavy metal. Tales of the mystical, dragons, demons and vast open plains, snow-covered tundra and Scorching desert sands abound here. Everything you need to take your teenage thoughts away from the world it’s tethered to. For me, it was the cold war and my native countries economic mess.

This is still apt today; except those teenagers have grown up and are making the music that they loved.

Forsaken Age has not only taken to the studio to make an album that had it been released in the early ’80s would be on every headbangers stereo.  As it is we have a morass of genres and noise these days. And so as not to get lost in the background sound, they have two secret weapons one Chrissy Scarfe on vocals.

Now where do I start with Chrissy, It has to be said that she has one of the most engaging voices in metal today. Clean, loud, and passionate, an aspect of NWOBHM was its punk undercurrents and Chrissy reminds me of a lot of those wonderful female punk bands I loved so much. And secondly, the band that backs her is so adept at the music they make each one giving it all. From splashy syncopation to tight bass lines enough guitar solos and crunching riffs to blow your socks off.

It’s a classic album full of short sharp punchy numbers much akin to the punk ethos. Get in quick smack you around retreat away to get ready to fight again. I would like to single out tracks but it is tough. All 11 thunderous tracks could be picked; I LOVED the Maiden like key change and Steve Harris gallop in Ride-On.

The spoken word intro to Iron Overlord and so much more really has taken me back to a time long gone but to a time when MUSIC was real MUSIC.

If you want something to headbang to and some seriously well made traditional heavy metal YOU will not find a better album ANYTIME soon. I have found myself singing the chorus to Ride On whilst at work. Now that’s a bloody good sign it’s a classic. So From a small nation at the end of the world comes a band with a sound that is just sumptuous and beautiful in its take on a classic genre.
