Sci-fi electro rockers Powerman 5000 finally made it down under this past week after an almost 3 year delay due to the pandemic. Originally slated in 2020, it was a huge relief for many fans who had been waiting years for the band to make their very first trek to Australia. All reviews so far were positive and the final show of the tour was no different.

Opening the show tonight was local alt rockers Black Stone Brewers who brought out a spacey trance like rock show with some nice prog elements thrown into the mix. Easily the lightest band on the bill, it was a relaxed but seamless transition into the rest of the night and the crowd were certainly appreciative early on.

The heavier All This Filth followed next and brought on more of an industrial groove setlist, packed with meaty riffs and groove beats that tapped into the more dancey mood of the crowd. ATF shirts littered the crowd showcasing the core fanbase this band has built for themselves in Perth. While the faster stuff generated some moshpits, it was really the more mid-tempo stuff that got people going, from the front to the back as the crowd lapped it up. Closing number “Drowning” was the big winner tonight and left an impressionable mark on the audience.

Powerman 5000 hit the stage amidst smokey haze and dark reddish colors, primed for a full hour of hits and more. With one of the newer tracks “Footsteps And Voices” busting it’s way in early, the energy was incredible as the crowd swayed and moved to the groove beats of the music. While many may be playing the nostalgia card waiting for the hit songs, the latter stuff that was added to the set was just as good and immensely fun to listen to and watch.

Frontman Spider One worked the crowd like a pro, wasting no time in making sure everyone in the audience was getting into it. “Nobody’s Real” was electrifying as was “How To Be A Human”. Movement on stage was energetic, each member playing to the audience perfectly with theatrical vigour.

It’s hard to go past classics like “Supernova Goes Pop” and encore favorite “When Worlds Collide”, the crowd going ballistic in the pit right to the end. This was a fun show, highly energetic and just pure entertainment.
