Golden Ashes – A Lightless Christ Shuns The Crown Of Divinity (Album Review)

Hailing from Smallingerland, Netherlands one-man project Golden Ashes return with their third full length in three years.

Golden ashes are a tricky one. This is another project from artist Maurice de Jong ( Gnaw Their Tongues, Aderlating, Cloak of Altering, etc). the music on offer is on the more extreme side of Black metal that is anguished, drone in its execution, and covered in symphonic elements. I have to mention the keyboards because they are ALL the way up there in the mix and at times distract from what’s going on underneath and at times make the heavier more extreme moments indiscernible.

Bewildered We Watched The Christ Ascend and The Day Of His Glorious Wrath are musically accomplished and continue Memories atheist and bewildered views on traditional religion, the keyboards mocking at times with their gospel, hymn-like moments.  Golden ashes use religious inspiration to create a nightmarish atmosphere with the music, the drone used to emphasize the direction, and the voice to cry and scream despair. There are blasts and manic riffing, but again you have to really listen to find them, which could be the whole idea of the concept

A little uneven that is more the fault of the mix than the music, this is divisive, the epic symphonic soundscapes are fantastic and the darkness underneath is worthy of your attention
