In Flames – I, the Mask (Album Review)

In Flames - I, the Mask

In Flames have been dividing fans with their past few albums and I, the Mask is no exception. The band in my opinion are still at the top of their game with this new release.

In Flames started out as creators (as with others’ bands) of the Gothenberg sound.

Yes, there were heavier bands, steeped more into the death metal side, but I love their sound. The guitars sound awesome, the tones they get out of them are pure In Flames and are instantly recognizable. The thing is, the level of heaviness, as with the past few albums, have strayed into more melodic than death metal.

Anders vocals slay on this album, switching up from melodic to growl is effortless and the sound of In Flames. If he was to leave the band, they would struggle to replace him. The rest of the band are complementing each other in the use of their chosen instruments and the production in a clean sense of being able to hear the mix on all mediums of listening.

I, the Mask still has heavy tracks, starting off in a strong fashion with Voices and followed by the title track.

Follow Me is an example of the more melodic version of the band, but in my own opinion, a band goes stale if they can’t experiment with their sound. Being the forefathers of the Gothenberg sound, they are damned well allowed to mix it up if they choose to do so. Haters will hate but I’m sure they won’t care either way, if people are talking about the band it’s better than not.

The solo in the song was pretty cool even if was short.

I really like the intro into (This is our) House, this is one of my favourite songs on the album with a great message of not giving up for what you believe. It is one of the heavier songs on the album, a great song.

After here the album does turn more mellow but like mentioned before there’s nothing wrong with that, I think this is a strong album that has a fantastic mix of heavy and melody with songs like We Will Remember and Stay with Me.

In Flames are still going strong and I, The Mask just proves this.

I rate this album highly but just where will it sit in the back catalogue of The Jester Race, Whoracle and even earlier albums, only time will tell. I, The Mask is currently on high rotation for me.
