The Ritual Aura – Velothi (Album Review)

The Ritual Aura - Velothi

Just like getting a new puppy that proceeds to destroy everything in your house on the first day of owning him; you are just not prepared to hear The Ritual Aura’s latest release Velothi. Many elements of this release are very high brow but in a terrifically fantastic way.

This album sounds like a good port tastes; it’s bold, daring, dark and leaves you wanting more. The quiet sections are whispers and the heavy sections are an onslaught.

It is unproductive and unfair to categorise or compare this release, it is just so damn creative and amazingly challenging for the listener. While there is a general sense of ‘The Ritual Aura’ amongst every second in this release, each track offers something different in terms of texture and tone. Like a great author, every word written/spoken has been scrutinized and revealed. The production value is huge, and the performances impeccable; I really hope I get to catch these maniacs from Perth live.

There are really no rules around how these tracks are written and expressed – something that I feel might be undervalued in the metal community. The guitar work is something else, such an eclectic style that serves to elevate each track from ho-hum basic background listening to an uplifting piece of music that demands your attention. The emotional taxation of this release is not something to take lightly; you need to take your time to truly understand what is going on. Suitable for those who listen to metal but studied musical theory at university.
