Swedish metal masters Soilwork recently dropped their latest album Övergivenheten which continues the progressive path the band have taken in recent years. The band are also set to return to Australia this November so we caught up with drummer Bastian Thusgaard to discuss it all.
On the recording process for the new album Övergivenheten:
Bastian: The process this time, usually I’ll prepare songs with David, him and I will go back and forth with drums and stuff like that and Bjorn, he actually wrote all his songs in the studio. So it was a good challenge for me because I like to be very prepared and basically for his songs it was something like getting the demo in the studio in the evening and then next morning I’ll jam through some ideas and listen back to the song with Bjorn and then we were deciding what to record.
On joining Soilwork and seeing how the band work:
Bastian: It was very interesting for me to get into the band to see how they work because my background, in the other projects I was involved with we usually have much smaller budgets so it was really something to be really prepared for studios and record an entire album in one week. So I was used to just going in there and execute and complete everything whereas in Soilwork we have a little more time to be more creative.
On his first time in Australia with Soilwork in 2019:
Everything was very nice, it’s a lovely country. It’s a pleasure so I’m sure it’s going to be very nice to go there again this November. Usually you can feel the fans appreciate us coming to the shows but I think it was special with Australia I think because of the distance. It’s not like you go there several times a year so people were really appreciate and something you could really feel.
