INTERVIEW: The Poor – Lead singer Skenie on the band’s return with new music

Interview by Andrew Massie

The Poor

Aussie rockers The Poor are back with new music, the first in over a decade. Time has not wearied this band. Still delivering their unabashed four-on-the-floor rock, “Payback’s A Bitch” represents a new era for The Poor, led by lead guitarist Daniels Cox’s premiere songwriting collaboration with the band.

After 12 years of touring their supercharged ‘NO BS Aussie Rock’ show with local and International rock bands including AC/DC, The Screaming Jets, Rose Tattoo and the Angels, cut to the present day and The Poor are ready to release new music on their old and new fans. Original members Anthony (Skenie) Skene, Matt Whitby and (almost original drummer) Gavin Hansen are joined by relative newcomer and lead guitarist Daniel Cox.

While the band are putting the final touches on the upcoming new record, we talked to lead singer Anthony “Skenie” Skene about the band’s return, what to expect on the new album, touring highlights and more.

On what to expect on the upcoming full-length album:

Skenie: There’s a lot of hard hitting stuff in there, there’s a lot of deep and matured broad music – not middle of the road stuff [laughs], it’s definitely all rock. We always have a little side of us where we get a bit deep sometimes but we’re a little older now, we’ve lived our lives and we’ve taken a few experiences but we still have to make up a lot of shit and talk shit [laughs] and just have a laugh and take the piss out of ourselves.

On the first single “Payback’s A Bitch:

It was the first song we worked on, the reason why we went with that (as first single) was because it was the first one we started writing with Dan our new guitarist, who has been with us for 3 years now and it’s just a balls to the wall rocking Poor song.

Looking back on previously sharing the stage and touring with such acts as AC/DC, The Angels and many others:

We all became very good friends with Doc Neeson, Angry Anderson I’m still very good friends with…I mean we’re going on tour soon, and yeah, love Angry. Brian Johnson, Angus and Malcolm, we spent so much time on the tours in the US. Just, oh, too many to think of.
