Last Days Of Eden – Butterflies (Album Review)

Let me start off by saying that Symphonic power metal is a relatively unexplored sub-genre for me. When I was asked to review the latest from Spanish band Last Days Of Eden so as to do the band and their chosen form of musical expression justice, I went down some very interesting rabbit holes. Being aware of bands like Sonata Arctica, Kingdom Come, and Nightwish at that time were really the only Power metal bands that were on my musical horizon. I needed a bigger yardstick for which to measure them by.

What I found was an eye-opener for this jaded old metalhead. I have always been open to all forms of music. I kick myself for not diving into this musical pool before. Forming in 2013 in Asturias Spain this 7-piece band would go onto record 3 albums and 1 EP so far.

Typical to Symphonic power metal bands they mix classical themes and instruments, (they have a bagpipe player in their midst). After many hours of listening to different and similar bands, I started to get the feeling it’s a very European phenomenon. The soundscapes and imagery the genre uses are very much how I imagine the rolling seas crashing off the Irish coast or the whistling wind blowing across the open plains of Mother Russia would sound like.

So you can see how this very beautiful music is making me feel it brings out my artistic side and this is something special. Not very often in this long music-loving life can I say that a metal album is genuinely beautiful. Yes, there is beauty in brutality and in power but this is quite something else.  What the band has in lead singer Ani M. Fojaco is very special. This is not to say that all six other members are not pulling their weight, as they really are very competent producers of composition and technic.  The vocals that she produces are a wondrous mix of Celtic lament and angelic beauty.  If you are looking for an album that will get you moving and move you on a spiritual level this is the one for you.

It has Atmosphere, power, and spirit in very, very healthy amounts throughout draped in soundscapes that some of the world’s best orchestras would be humble to call theirs. It has opened a whole new world for this jaded old metalhead.

So let this be your journey and let LAST DAYS IN EDEN be your guide to a more enlightened world of many possibilities.
