Ivan – Memory (Album Review)

Tragedy and much of metal music go hand in hand.

It seems that pessimism and the stark reality of life are permanent aspects of a lot of this music and Memory by Ivan definitely has this in spades. This release is the soundtrack to the most despairing film you have ever seen.

The melodies are intricate and the dirt brought by the guitars and voice are very welcomed. The violins and piano add an unsettling and sophisticated element to the music, giving the tracks an overall tragic feel which is, no doubt, the key intention of Ivan. The recording quality is fair but gives an overall idea of what Ivan is trying to accomplish. The pace is slow and relentless but has a tendency to run into itself. Perhaps this is the intention, to hold onto the unsettling notion of confusion and uncertainty.

The biggest issue with this release is the length of the tracks. I’m all for a progressive consideration of all styles of metal, but longer tracks need to offer something new and different, rather than showcasing similar melodic lines in a wide array. A classic case of ‘why uses 20 words when 200 will do’. Suitable for those dripping with existential angst.
