Wildheart – We Are (Album Review)

There is something to be said for the hardcore movement. There is a rawness of emotion that many other areas of heavy music cannot seem to replicate and Wildheart’s most recent release, We Are, is insanely emotional.

The melodies mix well with the heaviness of this EP. The breakdowns are what you need them to be; heavy, slowish and provide room to help you crack a skull or two. The light and shade in this release is masterfully done and the production supports it well. The track ‘We Are’ is a definite favourite and showcases the best of their writing ability. Treading the line between emotional appeal and darkness, the guitars are thick, the drums pound and the bass destroys the lower registers. Hardcore is alive with this release, and it resides in Brisbane.

Best’s vocal display communicates a degree of panic and intensity. This has become one of the true hallmarks of hardcore in the last decade, but there is a stylistic thing that can be a sticking point for some listeners. Best’s voice sometimes breaks.

It could be to denote passion and a sort of breaking down in an emotional flurry, but to most fans of heavy music, this might be seen as a lack of control. Deliberate or not, the tracks speak for themselves.

A strong release is suitable for breaking furniture in the dank clubs of rural/regional and urban Australia.
