Nekrovomit – Demonic Possession (Album Review)

Release Date: January 31st 2022 - Helldprod Records

“The Beast from the East” states the press release. Hailing from Indonesia and formed in 2021, Nekrovomit is a band for those who long for what Black Metal was. If you miss the days when black metal thrashy, dark, and new then Demonic Possession by Nekrovomit should be your next album. While this is the first offering for the band, they do refer to it as a demo tape which makes sense since the album’s total playtime is less than 23 minutes. Nekrovomit is comprised of A. Devastator on vocals, guitars, and bass while E. Velocity brings the drums.

I was initially impressed by Demonic Possession. It starts out dark and haunting with the opening track Enter the Gates of Hell. This is an unsettling commencement to the album reminiscent of Oranssi Pazuzu. There’s demonic wailing, detuned church bells, and generally a sense of uneasiness. The weak of the stomach will have exited by now, but for those who love the darkness, they’ll be on the edge of their seats. I thought I was on the verge of greatness.

Following from Enter the Gates of Hell, we have 5 very old-school-sounding black metal songs including a cover of Outbreak of Evil by Sodom. Nekrovomit has nailed that black metal sound even right down to the poor sound quality. If you dig that sound, you’re going to love this. Faces of Death was the standout track, though to be honest there’s not a huge depth to the music.

The album finishes with Abattoir which is a very short instrumental track. This feels like a rushed end that seems separated from the remainder of the songs. Almost as though they had a “they escaped somehow…” moment. There’s a lot of promise here, I’d have just preferred another track like Faces of Death.

I’m interested to see what Nekrovomit can bring to the table after this initial release. There’s talent here, I’d have just liked to see some more depth.

Perhaps a full-length album would allow the band to properly demonstrate what they’re capable of. Will the band live up to its title, The Beast from the East, only time will tell?
