To Octavia – Somewhere In A World, Not Of The Dream (Album Review)

Release Date: July 16th 2021 - Independent

Not going to lie, reading the title of this record got me thinking I was going to in for an emo sandwich. Part of that assumption was on point, but it was the freshest emo sandwich I’d had since From First to Last.

I thought I was done with Tenor Vox for life but To Octavia has broken that rule and I’ve opened myself up to it once more due to their diligent delivery and remodeling of a sound that’s been exhausted for a long time. The compositions on this album are pretty incredible and the production really reinforces the energy and aggression the band is trying to communicate.

As a 36-year-old Punk that lived through the rise and fall of Emo and screamo, I’m not angsty enough to be inspired by the lyrics but it’s not to say they are bad.

In other words, this just reinforces that this group is reaching its more youthful audiences and not firing stay bangers at middle age scene kids that abandoned their black hair dye and ear noodles 16 years ago.

Lots of inspiration borrowed from the screamo and metalcore era but you can hear a lot of newer Rap, Metal, and electronic characteristics making an appearance to enhance the song at the perfect moment before you have a chance to try and predict where it’s about to go.

I’m Super into this. A big part of me though I wouldn’t be but by the end of the record, there was so much content that I just had to embrace.

Definitely see this group becoming a big deal very soon.

If you like: If you’re a veteran emo kid who’s not afraid to show it this is going to make your 2022. It’s familiar enough but carefully considers its own individuality enough to give you a new favorite record. I feel like the inbetweeners like big Periphery Fans are also going to love this Record too.

Haters be like:  If you never liked the emo screamo genres in the first place you will not love this! It’s got some amazingly heavy bits but lyrically and emotively it’s going to feel out of place on a playlist next to Cannibal Corpse and Napalm Death.
