Orianthi – Rock Candy (Album Review)

Orianthi - Rock Candy

Across the wide brown land that is Australia for millennia, the sound of music has rung out. From the first peoples whom for over fifty thousand years breathed life into the earth and skies with their songs, that gave body and soul to their dream time stories. To where we stand today a multi-cultured and dynamic society who also in their own way enliven their own stories with their own moments of magic.

None so more than Orianthi Adelaide born and bred musician who with her own brand of guitar pyrotechnics has lit up the rock community at home and abroad. Catching the eye of legends like Alice Cooper and Michael Jackson. Not the most prolific in her own solo work, but what she brings is a sumptuous and passionate back catalogue. This new album Rock Candy is no exception.

With its mix of modern guitar tone that screams of influences from the greats of six-string wizardry Satriani, Vai and Lukather. It’s not often I get to say this but very few modern guitarists give me goosebumps whilst listening to them.

Orianthi is one of the very few. Opening the album with Illuminate part 1 and closing with Illuminate part 2 is a work of genius. Many a great journey has a beginning middle and end and all stops in between. As you would expect this record is not going to hang around nope it’s a rollicking 31 minutes that is stuffed packed with 11 tracks. So not only do you get blistering guitar solos and heavy rocking rhythm guitars you don’t have to wade through the morass and dirge that belies a lot of the latest supposedly shot from the hip rock n roll albums of late.

Rock Candy is a very apt name for this set of songs all 11 of them give that sugar rush all good rock roll should. Whilst your head spins from that sweet, sweet candy her sparkling clean note perfect heavy rock guitar is punctuated with that southern vocal drawl that she does so well. The highlight for me was Red Light it bounced around with an infectious NYE punk-sounding chorus and one hell of a solo possibly no defiantly my favourite one of the many, many favourites I have on this amazing album.

So when you feel in the need of something sweet that at its core is pure rock then this is the candy for you. It won’t give you cavities, just a sore arm from all the air guitar YOU and ME both know you’re going to do.
