Ossuary – Addicted To Human Flesh

Ossuary is a 4 piece death metal band from Colombia. Death metal can mean a variety of things nowadays, however in the context of South America we could almost safely assume that this would in fact mean “old school death metal”, at least in my experience. It would almost seem that our Latin American colleagues got stuck into the good 90’s stuff and did not concern themselves with the evolution of the genre. Therefore, “Addicted to human flesh” is exactly what we expect it to be, – a crafty, well-rehearsed band with an old-school brutal sound without the fruits of modern metal production.

The EP starts with a “laments of the void” intro song which is just shy of 2 min,- calm ambient intro with some guitars in the background. After that, it’s full of a barrage of old-school death metal.

The riffs are “in your face” throughout. The songs have great aggressive, evil, and brutal energy. There are no lead melodies accompanying the riffs, it’s all riffs all the way. There is a cool guitar solo every now and then. The vocals are high screaming style and seem a bit in the background, I guess they’re meant to color the music more than lead it.

It works well. The drums sound a bit boxy, however, it works with the rest of the instruments. The bass guitar has a lot of top-end which adds a clear definition. I would really like a more cannibal corpse low-end sound. Perhaps the musicians unanimously agreed they want all instruments clearly heard.

From the song titles, you could clearly identify lyrical themes would include your typical topics around death, violence, and torture. Of course, these should be taken as highly conceptual and not taken in a practical sense of things. The highlight of the album is meant to be the 7th track which is titled “Addicted to human flesh” which has some cool riffs however is just as brutal as any other song in the album.

If you lived through early death metal in the 1990s then you will most certainly enjoy this album. Overall the music is somewhat pleasing and would work really in the background of a metal mix for your daily metal energy as this is not something that requires a great deal of attentive listening, it is really meant for enjoying. I could not fault the music, other than we heard all this before. The music could perhaps benefit from modern metal production, however, we should understand that may not be always readily available in South America. We should appreciate it for what it is – a stark reminder of the good times.
