Paganizer – Beyond The Macabre (Album Review)

Release Date: June 24th 2022 - Transcending Obscurity Records

The one and only Paganizer are all set to release its upcoming album, Beyond The Macabre, on June 24 via Transcending Obscurity Records. Formed in 1998, Paganizer are seriously prolific and have been a mainstay of the Swedish death metal scene for more than two decades. This is the band’s 12th full-length studio album, and you don’t survive that long without learning a thing or two about producing stellar music. This is an excellent release and a true masterclass in blackened death metal.

Beyond The Macabre brings the signature groove and atmospheric elements which have become par for the course in recent Paganizer releases. Despite some of the die-hard fans preferring their older sound, it works very well and adds a layer of intelligence and depth. There are still the brutal moments as you’d expect, but be prepared to get some of the groovy headbanging.

This helps accentuate the heavier elements of the album and provides relief.

Nowhere is the atmospheric groove more evident than with the opening track, Down the Path of Decay, which sets the scene for the album.

Meatpacker is the standout track with an amazing drum intro and solid sound throughout. The ominous chanting of “meatpacker” adds delectable brutality that sends shivers down the spine. It’s a relatively short song at less than 3 minutes total length, but it’s just such a great song. A word of warning though, if you’re listening to this with headphones on be mindful of who’s around when you inevitably start singing “meatpacker” aloud. Yep – I got some strange looks at the supermarket!

Other stand-out moments are the grove melodies and impeccable vocals for Raving Rythmes of Rot, the high-pitched guitar wizardry of Succumb to the Succubus, and the amazing intro for You Are What You Devour.

Unpeaceful End rounds out the album and features Karl Willets of none other than BOLT THROWER. Another solid track and a great way to finish what has been a great album.

Paganizer are synonymous with high-quality Blacked Death Metal and Beyond The Macabre is no exception. Well worth a listen and I’m sure that you’ll give it at least a few spins through, I know that I have.
