The opening title track Planet Cracker chugs along nicely, and I am in the mood for some stoner. The vocals are heavily distorted so you’re not getting an electric wizard/sleep type feel that I find tends to induce the slow head nod but the thick grooves carve along satisfactorily. And besides, they’re just too damn energetic to be like those two bands.
It’s more of a Mastodon/Baroness, heavily fuzzed psychedelic rock deal, but I am liking it. Very much so in fact.
Rookwood lurch has a real Sabbath feel in more than one or two parts and really reminds me of those seventies jams, with some great wah tones.
Swampfoot begins with distorted bass and kicks into a laidback beat. The vocals are sung in a more typical undistorted style, which gives the song a very different feel from the others.
These guys can definitely do more than one type of style, but they’re also smart enough to know what they do best.
There was no way I was not listening to a song called Shitwizard. Shitwizard begins with a wah drenched riff and very softly spoken vocals. There are some brilliant, relaxed leads and I’m enjoying more of the fat rhythms the Hypergiant team is laying down. The temp change midway helps to add to that great 70’s feel.
