Brisbane’s RHINO is continuing their rise and dominance within the local heavy scene with the release of their second single for the year, DJW. The track serves as the band’s follow-up to May 2021’s Psychic Mess, and is without a doubt, their most emotionally charged release to date.
DJW was produced and engineered by Lucius Borrich ( COG ) at Studio101, Byron Bay, and mastered by Tony “Jack The Bear” Mantz (Nick Cave, Silverchair, You Am I ) at Deluxe Mastering.“ We were lucky enough to have Loosh play drums on this track too. Which is pretty amazing to have his power and precision laying down the groove on a RHINO track.

” says Simon Benson, who continues with more great news for fans, “ We’ve been blown away by people at gigs asking if we have physical copies of our music, so we’ll be putting out an EP real soon.”
The video clip effectively serves as a video diary or time capsule that we can one day refer back to, as it captures and collages together moments from the band on tour in the midst of some of the strangest times we’ll ever know. The juxtaposition of masked faces and all but empty airports, against the scenes of a rowdy Enmore Theatre crowd- strange times indeed – and further evidence of the band’s triumph through the adversity that the music industry faced over the last couple of years.
It’s a track that’s especially close to the heart of guitarist, James Wassenaar, whose self-prescribed dose of riff-therapy gave rise to DJW – but when it comes to the song’s meaning, the band want us to look for our own interpretation – “ We are always keen for the listener to take from the song what they like, to have their own interpretation of an underlying meaning. There is a theme in parts of the song that has to do with witnessing people trying to maintain face when they fundamentally know they’ve wronged.

DJW begins with light caresses, drawing you nearer, invoking scenes of a barren desert landscape, it feels like the gentle start of what’s to become an epic tale for the ages; before erupting with absolute force into the classic RHINO riffs we’ve all come to expect – fully charged of course, with those unmistakable gritty vocals of Simon Benson.
RHINO have in no way let a global pandemic stand in their way, in the midst of it all supporting industry heavyweights Wolfmother and COG – they are also geared up to play the Gold Coast’s longest-running independent festival, Wallapalooza as part of the strongest lineup in the festivals history!
If their impact since arriving on the scene in 2019 is anything to go by, 2022 better watch out! The 2021 Queensland Music Award Finalists are among Brisbane’s best exports and are more than ready to take their product to the next level!
