Sinister Downfall – A Dark Shining Light (Album Review)

Sinister Downfall (Eugen Kohl) is the master of melancholy and drawn out despair, as ‘A Dark Shining Light’ finds the deepest part of your subconscious, the part of the mind that is buried deep, buried in the dark. ‘A Dark Shining Light’ was released back in may on Funere and Weird Truth Productions and is officially distributed by Satanath Records. This masterpiece is 50 minutes of pure numbing funeral doom and is limited to 500 copies.

The riffs throughout this album are alluring with their diversity and gradual build of a distorted heavy sound, perfectly complemented by the drums. Vocals are guttural and gloom-filled. The piano creates a lighter feeling amongst the darkness. To me, this feels like the hopelessness found during a period of mourning, yet a point of introspection a gracefulness is found within this pain. ‘A Dark Shining Light’ is like our existence, is full of emotion, an embrace of the pessimistic in an attempt of absolution.

The writing, recording and production is un-faulted, it is clear that Eugem Kohl has taken great care throughout the creative process to achieve what can only be described as perfection.

There are not many funeral doom albums that make me want to look into the depths of the sky and contemplate existence. This is why I give 5 out of 5 roos to Sinister Downfall’s ‘A Dark Shining Light’, but instead of roos’ let’s make that 5 hands reaching for the dead.
