Slaughter the Giant – Depravity (Album Review)

Release Date: October 28th 2022 - Hammerheart Records

Slaughter The Giant - Depravity

Hailing from Belgium, Slaughter the Giant unleash their debut album after an impressive EP Depravity. An Album that walks the line between melodic death metal, brutal death metal, and some excellent atmospheric orchestrations.

Depraved in such ways that only a track called ‘’Co-ed Butcher’’ would utilize female mezza soprano vocals to add texture and melody whilst sacrificing none of their power. The album closer ‘’Dark Days’’ takes the symphonic arrangements to an epic level that is dynamic, memorable, and simply crushing.

Slaughter the Giant isn’t afraid to mix things up and ‘’The Undead’’ is a track for the melodic death metal purist, that roars and leaves its riffs banging around in your head. “Compliance” reinforces their underground muscle, the vocals roar and screech with intensity, the time changes seamless and intense, the impressive kick work pushing each track forward whilst the solo only adds to the epic orchestration before delving back into the brutal. “Ritual Abuse’’ is a screamingly fast track that along with the title track “Depravity” are the epitome of the unholy marriage that is orchestral death metal. Glorious highs and brutal nadirs of intensity.

Depravity is exactly that, music corrupted and twisted into new hellish forms, a mutation steeped in the power of death metal and the brutality it brings. Slaughter the Giant’s evolution has begun, their music as memorable as it is heavy, ugly, and yet illustrious in equal measures.
