Sodom – Bombenhagel (EP Review)

After releasing their new album “Genesis XIX” last year, Sodom had plans to release their EP “Bombenhagel” in time for the summer festival season, which was to include a sticker with all the confirmed tour dates.

But the pandemic had other plans, with most festivals being postponed until 2022. The EP will be released on August 20th 2021, “as a signal to our fans, we’re still around, the story continues” says bassist and vocalist Tom Angelripper.

The EP begins with a re-recorded version of Bombenhagel which originally appeared on the band’s second album “Persecution Mania” in 1987.

The title track begins with a decadent bass riff that immediately grabs your attention, and then it kicks into fast energetic guitars, the rhythm is addictive to the ear. Throw in some epic drumming, and guitar work and there you have the resurrected track from the 80’s. A great beginning to the EP.

Coup De Grace is hectic from start to finish yet still maintains the groove of the first track, the hook of the riffs and the vocals reach in to grab you and give you no choice but to be carried along, the lyrics are clever and easily distinguishable, which adds to the atmosphere. High octane heavy metal!

The third and final track “Pestiferous Posse” is outstanding, it takes off with wild guitar solos over a formidably heavy riff that seizes you in its grip.

The vocals are sinister and portray the sentiment perfectly. I had to play this one on repeat a few times, it delivered such intensity, that I didn’t want it to end.

The truth in the words of Tom Angelripper “the story continues” is evident. An enticing view into what we can expect next from Sodom. My only disappointment is that I wanted more!
